Shedding a Little Light
“At that time, the Lord appointed 72 others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.” Luke 10:1
The Lord sent disciples out two by two so that no one would be alone. He sent them to bring His message, to heal, to preach, to bring peace. Jesus told them to be happy with whatever they were given to eat and wherever they would lay they heads to rest. He sent them with nothing but their faith and trust in the Lord. And so, they went, and they did all those things and now we are called to do the same.
We must rid ourselves of excess things and put our faith in the Lord and trust in His providence. First, we must clear out our clutter. Depending on how much of a collector you are, this may take time. Give yourself the grace of time to do what must be done to lighten your load. Then lighten the load of your calendar and remove activities that do not bring you joy or serve a purpose in your life any longer. Make room to do what the Lord needs of you.
If you do not have a clue of what God wants from you, then it is time to get centered and have a good talk with God. A good way to start would be to attend a retreat or a day of reflection. We have the LOTW retreat here in the fall and there are many day retreats at St. Benedict Abbey which is just a short ride away. These will help you discern your relationship with Jesus and open the gifts he has given to you. Formed.org is another good way to reflect from home so choose a video that sparks ideas that you can pray about. Choose a book that will help focus your purpose. It does not matter how you get started. It just matters that you get started. Prepare the way of the Lord! Be his witness! In Acts 1:8 we read, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
So, pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit and go out! Go to the ends of the earth or just down the block to a neighbor, or to the food pantry or the soup kitchen, etc. It does not matter how far…just go! Bring the light, be the light, and …
